An accent? What? Me?
Okay, so everyone makes fun of everyone’s accent at some point. Being pretty unique, our accent is often singled out for a bit of harmless ridicule! However, The Western Mail is reporting that in addition to being good for a laugh, it is considered to be a distinct disadvantage for people who want to succeed in business.
The Western Mail explains that these results come from a survey of British business leaders and that 79% of particpants believed that a strong regional accent is a disadvantage in business. “17% of UK directors see those with a Welsh accent as likely to be successful in business“, the story goes on to say. On the other hand though, “38% of directors believe that a Welsh accent conveys above-average honesty and trustworthiness“.
My view? I would suggest that most of those ‘business leaders’ questioned were from South East England and not selected evenly throughout England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales - as with most of these surveys!
