100 Welsh Heroes
Who’s this chap? He’s Aneurin Bevan (1897 – 1960), regarded as the father of the National Health Service.
“Born into a non-conformist family in Tredegar, Bevan left school at the age of 13. He began work at the Tytryst Colliery, from where he was eventually sacked for his trade union activities. In 1929 Bevan was elected the Labour Party MP for Ebbw Vale.”
He was voted the ‘Number 1 Welsh Hero‘ in a poll during 2004 run by Culturenet Cymru. The top five were:
- Aneurin Bevan (2426 votes)
- Owain Glyndwr (2309 votes)
- Tom Jones (2072 votes)
- Gwynfor Evans (1928 votes)
- Richard Burton (1755 votes)
