Skype Upping Rates as of Jan. 1st

Anyone in the US or Canada who’s been enjoying free calls over Skype to their friends without Skype will soon be paying for their conversations.  Skype has been running a promotional thing wherein SkypeOut calls to US and Canadian phones have been free.  Starting January 1 they’ll be charged a per minute fee of 2.1 cents American/2.4 cents Canadian unless you want to fork over $30 to get unlimited calling.

Their SkypeOut rates for International calls are going up as well.  Right now I’m paying 1.7 cents American for calls to the UK.  That will now be approx. 3 cents American per minute as of Jan 1st!  They’ve apparently decided to add VAT onto American calls and this basically makes them right about the same as I pay through my phone company.  Still not a bad rate, but certainly doesn’t set them apart from the competition.  So, in my book there’s no great savings there.  :O(
For those who may not know, SkypeOut calls are calls made from your computer to a landline phone via Skype.

The UK have only recently had free UK-landline calls - and that’s only if you spend £10 on Skype credit and then you only get free calls for six months.

But still, Skype is a great bit of software and great value whichever way you look at it. :-)

Quite true. Computer-to-computer functionality, reliability and ease of use it can’t be beat. And I prefer it far and above any of the other similar softwares. But I’ll admit to being disappointed in the International calling rate change. I was getting quite spoilt by low cost calls to Wales. :O)
