Mixed Emotions - Reopening a Mine
Unity Mine in Neath Valley is going into production in June bringing 60 new jobs to the area with the potential of adding 200 more. This is good news in a time when it seems all we see are facilities closings, layoffs and bad news. Hoping to bring out a million tons of coal a year, Unity Power feels there may not be enough skilled miners left in Wales to fill the need. If that’s the case, they’ll have to bring in workers from Poland and other European countries. It’s possible the new mine will pave the way for the opening of four others.
My only concern is one of safety. With all the horrific mining accents that have occurred in the States and elsewhere around the world recently, I sincerely hope Unity Power will take the steps necessary to ensure the safety of Welsh miners.
