Salmon Smolts Released in River Taff
Wel, roeddwn i’n mynd ysgrifennu y yn Gymraeg ‘ma. Ond dw i ddim wedi dysgu digon eto, felly bydda i’n ceisio ysgrifennu dim ond y paragraff cyntaf. :O(
Rwy i mor hapus i adroddiad y oedd am 5,000 eogiaid ifanc yn rhyddhau i’r Afon Taf heddiw fel mae awdurdodau yn ceisio i ailosod yr eogiaid gwyllt yn y dyffrynnoedd De Orllewin.
I am so pleased to report that around about 5,000 young salmon were released into the River Taff today as authorities attempt to replenish the wild salmon population in the Southwest valleys.
Industrial pollution and mining were the leading causes of the near-extinction of salmon in the River Taff in the early 1980s. Water quality clean-up efforts and the construction of fish passes have since made the river a viable habitat for fish that may travel as far north as Merthyr Tydfil for spawning.
This new release will add to the 300 or so salmon now making the migration home to the Taff from Cardiff Bay each year, and it will be the first time in 200 years that these fish are spawning in their ancient spawning grounds near Merthyr Tydfil.
