Welsh Hobbits

HobbitTake a look at the photo here. Is it from the film version of the Lord of the Rings? No, it’s not! It’s actually a family home which has been built in Pembrokeshire. After four months of hard work and around £3,000, the family had an environmentally friendly home in this beautiful part of Wales.

Some key points of the building are:

- Dug into hillside for low visual impact and shelter
- Stone and mud from diggings used for retaining walls, foundations etc.
- Frame of oak thinnings (spare wood) from surrounding woodland
- Reciprocal roof rafters are structurally and aesthetically fantastic and very easy to do
- Straw bales in floor, walls and roof for super-insulation and easy building

It all looks pretty clever stuff and would fit into any natural landscape around the country. The House website is very informative and well worth a visit.

Looks very cozy, actually. My only issue would be with the amount of light available inside on a gloomy day. We’ve a few earthen homes here too and they actually work very well - especially in the kind of heat we have.

This house reminds me of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s house in “Little House on the Prarie.” Also I live in Florida, USA, but i am Welsh, with last name of Thomas. I would love to visit Wales. My family first settled in Gomer, Ohio.
