Yeah well…..
There’s been a lot of discussion of late relating to Mr. Collin’s remark regarding Welsh as being a brain dead language. And I admit, I’m tired and have had a couple of whiskys nawr. But I will say that sober or not, I think his opinion in this case should have been kept to himself.
He uses the excuse that he accidentally left in the word “brain” - oh give me a break! Nobody writes on a blog, let a alone a political one, without knowing that it will be read by anyone in the world who has an interest in Welsh politics. And if you ‘forget’ to remove a significant word such as “brain” when you edit it then you are either an extremely poor proofreader or you meant it to stand as written.
Poor editing or not, it’s people like Collins who work against the continuation of the Welsh language. Does he have a clue how many people around the world speak Welsh? Or are learning Welsh? People who don’t even live in Wales nor have Welsh heritage - they learn the language for the pure joy of doing so.
Does he realize, I wonder, that stupid comments such as his undermine the work of thousands of people, who have laboured against incredible odds century after century to maintain a culture and identity that would otherwise be lost?
Perhaps he should consider a different country. And since he’s just effectively killed his career, he’ll have plenty of time to find someplace where he won’t have to deal with a ‘brain dead’ language.
