Killay

One of the perils of growing up on the West Coast of America is you tend to go stir crazy if you don’t go outside at least 27 times a day. So in spite of the gloom and cold today I found myself in a state of pacing and decided to go for a drive.

I’ve been through Killay before - its just up the road from Sketty after all. But I’ve not stopped there. Well, today I had decided my quest was to find a bread pan so I could make bread to go with the vegetable soup I’m planning to make over the weekend. I never did find the bread pan but I had a wonderful venture to Killay and spent a very pleasant hour looking through the shops there. The deli had wonderful offerings of local and regional produce, something that has simply blown me away - the produce raised here in Wales is so superior to that in California that you would not believe it. I didn’t. I mean we’re supposed to be the vegetable capital of the world, right? Well, here’s news California - compared to Welsh produce you are pathetic. I’m used to getting tiny califlower heads that are mostly covered with brown spots and so unappealing that you don’t want to buy them, let alone eat them. But the califlowers that are grown here are not just huge, but beautifully white, just as they should be and absolutely delicious!

Anyway, not only did I discover a deli and fresh local produce shop, but they’ve got a health food store and a lovely little bakery. Well, a couple of them actually. I stopped in one and bought a loaf of fresh baked leek and cheese bread. Touted as being “A little taste of Wales” it looked wonderful. I’m pleased to say it tasted just as good as it looked. Needless to say, it didn’t make it home in one piece - it was just too good NOT to try the moment I found a place to set down the stuff I’d bought and tear off a handful of bread.

So now I’m set. I know where to go for fresh local produce, cupcakes and specialty bread. And I’m very glad to have found all that because now I’ve got a kitchen full of goodies, homemade vegetable soup and a weekend of rygbi in store. I am in hog Heaven!

Gracious, Arwen. Compared to anywhere else, California produce is pathetic. Sorry but ’tis true and good to hear a real Californian say it. It has no taste. California was meant for mining gold, not growing vegetables. Hazel
