Autumn

I went for a drive today, it was a beautiful autumn day - crisp and sunny - perfect traveling weather. With Radio Cymru playing the Blues EDF Rygbi match (they didn’t win) I headed out toward Carmarthenshire with the intent to visit Llanelli. I never made it to Llanelli, ran out of time - too easily sidetracked on this lovely day. But the roads I traveled reminded me why I came to Wales and why I’m studying the language and the culture, and why I want with all my heart to stay here.

As you head out of Abertawe you’re presented with the most magnificent view of the Carmarthenshire countryside - patchwork fields and green hills basking in the warmth of the bright sunshine. And there, right on the motorway is the sign that made up my mind. It reads “Croeso i Sir Gaerfyrddin” and below that “Welcome to Carmarthenshire”. I like that, the Welsh is first.

I think what crowned my day trip, though, were the trees in shades of red and yellow and orange as they shed their summer leaves. This is new to me, we haven’t many seasonal changes in our part of California, some, but not many.

I don’t think there is another word for it when you see the Wales countryside in autumn. As the only word that begins to describe what you see is “breathtaking”.

That’s what I love about the climate of mid-Missouri. We have all the seasons. Real snow and cold in the winter, lots of heat and thunderstorms in the summer. But autumn, how glorious! We have a huge sugar maple in the side yard of our house that never fails to make a fabulous display. Right now it is every color from deep red-orange at the top to flaming yellow at the bottom and still some green in the really protected inside. Magnificent!
