Welsh Place Names

Wales has its fair share of strangely named towns and cities, the famous Llanfair PG to Cardiff’s Splot. Now you can find out all about these and more with the newly published The Dictionary Of Place-Names Of Walesfrom Gomer Press.

For example, the story behind Maenclochog, meaning “rocks sounding like a bell”, is thanks to two rocks near a church which if struck would make an appealing sound.

This is a REALLY impressive book. SyB was showing it to me the other day and it has very interesting bits of information about each place as well as the translation of the name and its proper spelling.
