wireless connection question

Postby Cymrulamb on Mon Aug 22, 2005 5:14 pm

David,

I'm hoping you or someone else there can answer this technical question.

Our laptop has a 2.4 ghz 802.11g PCMIA card (Netgear WG511T). Will this allow me to connect to a wireless internet site in Wales?

We have been told that there is an internet cafe called Cwpwrdd Cornel in Bala near where we are staying and it has wireless internet capability. However, I have looked up the name "Cwpwrdd Cornel" and can't find an email address so that I can write and ask them.

I know that many computer items are not compatible between the U.S. and Britain.

Thanks for any help you might offer.

Yes, your wireless card will work here. The standard is global.

However, you'll need to find a wireless 'hotspot'. You'll also need to subscribe to the service.

Places like Starbucks, PC World and some Motorway service stations have wifi hotspots, as do the major airports.

British Telecom has this service: http://www.btopenzone.com/

Oh, if that Internet Cafe allows you to connect then that's great too! You won't need BT OpenZone then. :D

Oh, and I moved this topic to Questions and out of Site Help :D

David,

Thank you so much for your quick response. We are so grateful for the information. I wish I had asked you about this a couple days ago. My husband fretted over it all weekend.

No problem. I'm glad I could help.

I can't help with the Welsh language questions so I have to make myself useful with other topics!!!

I'm happy to report that after many days of frustration, we finally got the wireless connection on the laptop to work! Well, at least here in our own home. With my luck, it will work fine here in the living room but not anyplace else!

Keep your fingers crossed. (Gee, do they do that in Wales for good luck?)
