games section

Postby Mynwy on Tue Apr 15, 2008 6:45 pm

just a suggestion - there seem to be quite a few word games (and the picture game of course) on the forum, but they are spread over quite a few different sections. (and sometimes I forget where to find them! 8-[ )

My suggestion is, why not move them all to a new seperate section?

(not knowing much about the technical side of actually doing that, please forgive me if doing that is just too complicated! )

The Word Association and Noun "games" have to stay in the Welsh Language section though. It is important for learners that they remain there.

For the simple reason that they are an educational and learning tool. If I was a newcomer I would not expect to find them amidst games. Furthermore, if they were in a games section I would never check what people had contributed.

Well Ann, I'm sorry but I don't agree with you here. First, yes they are a tool but they are also fun. They are games, not serious lessons. Additionally, if you knew to check them in the Welsh Language section, you would know to check them in another section. You don't limit your forum visits to just the Welsh Language section after all.

I think a games section is a very good idea and I think all the games should go in there. If learners can play the games in the Welsh Language section, they can play them elsewhere just as easily. Newcomers are not going to know the games are in the Welsh Language section. But they might well look at a games section to see what's there.

And I'll also say that it might actually attract a lot more participants because there may be people who visit here who feel their Welsh is not at a level sufficient to spend time in the Welsh Language section. Or perhaps they would like to participate but don't want to learn Welsh. And, frankly, the more people who play, the more fun it is. Right now there's only a core group that plays those games. Perhaps by moving them to a dedictated game area more people will play.

Neither the noun game nor the word association game require knowlege of Welsh, they do require a dictionary and those are available online. So everyone could enjoy playing them whether they want to learn Welsh or not.

We have had a number of very fun games start here and get lost in the shuffle. One of my favorites was the "who said that?" game. Where is it now? There were a couple of others going at the same time that were also fun. Could anyone find them? If we could have them all in one place, people would have choices. Some people like one kind of game; some another. Give everyone a chance to see everything that is available. I like mynwy's idea.

An interesting idea. :)

I've added it to my list. It's not complicated but I may hold off on it for a short while as...

I'm also keen to hear if there are any more thoughts from other members on you idea.

It sounds like a great idea to me. I'm always trying to figure out what happened to whatever game, and where I saw it.

I understand Ann's point, the language games are useful for learners, but I still think they could be easier to find (especially for new members) if there was a seperate games section.
Why not a main section for games (as with Yr Adran Gymraeg) with subsections (as with Lle I Siarad Cymraeg Yn Unig/Translations/Welsh Language/Correction Corner) which would allow for the games from the Welsh Department to be kept together - a 'learning the language' or 'improving vocabulary' subsection for instance.
A glance at the index page would then show that all the games are together in one place, but the group headings could separate the different types of games so that learners would still know where to find games which would help with learning Welsh.
Members wanting to post new games would know exactly where the best place to post them would be (instead of in lots of different subsections as they are at the moment) and could also see if there are already similar games on the forum. There have already been some 'lost' games mentioned which I certainly haven't found yet - with 3 years worth of posts, I wouldn't have a clue where to look, but if they were all in one place it would be a doddle!

sorry - that looks rather more wordy than I meant it to be when I started #-o
